Playgrounds in Copenhagen

In Fælledparken in Østerbro, you will find the Traffic Playground, where children can learn about road safety while making their way around child-sized roads and cycle paths. The same park is home to the Tower Playground, where five famous Copenhagen towers have been transformed into play structures, allowing children to climb their way through a miniature version of the city.

In Nørrebro, you can visit Superkilen and explore the area’s play and activity facilities, while Skydebanehaven in Vesterbro is an ideal stop if you would like to combine playtime with a break in green surroundings.

You can also visit the playground in the King’s Garden. Here, children can play with views of Rosenborg Castle before the whole family continues exploring the gardens. With playgrounds dotted throughout the city, it is easy to find one along the way and give the children some free play between the weekend’s planned activities.

Head to the beach

If the family is longing for sand between their toes and some fresh air, there are several beaches in and around Copenhagen that are ideal for an excursion. Head to Amager Strandpark, for example, where the long sandy beach and open spaces offer plenty of room for play, walks and relaxation in peaceful surroundings close to the city.

You can also head to Bellevue Beach north of Copenhagen or explore the coastline along the Øresund. A trip to the seaside can include beach games and crab catching when the season and conditions allow, while children can explore the water’s edge and adults enjoy a break from the city’s busy programme.

A trip to the beach does not have to take up the whole day. Build sandcastles, take a walk along the water or pick up something tasty on the way and enjoy a few hours by the coast before heading back to Tivoli Hotel.

Discover new experiences north of Copenhagen

Head north, where castles, forests and family-friendly experiences are dotted across North Zealand. In Helsingør, you can visit Kronborg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its historic halls and corridors and discover the castle known around the world as Hamlet’s castle.

Another impressive castle awaits in Hillerød. Surrounded by a lake and beautiful gardens, Frederiksborg Castle gives the whole family an opportunity to discover several centuries of Danish history. If you would rather spend the day in nature, Dyrehaven is an ideal destination for families who want to be active together. Walk or cycle along the many paths through forests and open landscapes while deer roam freely throughout the area. Cycling through beautiful scenery is a great way to spend part of a weekend break, and a bike makes it easy to explore more of the green surroundings.

You can also visit the Open Air Museum in Kongens Lyngby, where historic farms, houses and mills are gathered in a vast green landscape. Here, children can discover what life in the countryside was like in the past while enjoying plenty of space to explore outdoors.

If your family simply feels like spending a day in the forest, there is no need for an extensive programme. Children can build dens, collect firewood, look for small creatures and let their imaginations run free among the trees.

Experiences in beautiful surroundings south and west of Copenhagen

To the west, you can travel back in time at Land of Legends Lejre. Here, the past is brought to life in historic settings, and children can try their hand at traditional crafts. It is an experience where children do not just observe – they can be curious, explore and learn along the way.

Another option is the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, where you can get close to original Viking ships and discover the story of life at sea during the Viking Age. Combine your visit with a walk along Roskilde Fjord for a day that offers both history and fresh air.

You can also visit Folkehuset Absalon in Vesterbro, where communal dining takes place in relaxed and colourful surroundings, or explore Torvehallerne, where each family member can choose from a variety of dishes and specialities.

If you want to make dinner a little more special, try Pincho Nation, where circus-inspired décor, bright colours and small dishes turn the restaurant visit into part of the entertainment.
